Traveling light is a challenge - I'll admit that it is the kind of challenge I usually avoid, but with rising luggage costs and more exotic destinations, people are starting to pack as lightly as possible.

You knew the trend toward transparency on the web would reach this point eventually: there's now an app that lets you automatically publish every credit card purchase you make to the web, where friends can comment and interact with them, Facebook-style. It's called
Blippy.
The idea of showing your friends everything you buy obviously raises some privacy concerns. Some purchases are embarrassing, and sometimes you might just want to be off the grid. Blippy suggests using a separate credit card for the service, so you have control over which transactions show up and which don't. On the other hand, Blippy makes location-based
social networking almost automatic: if you share your purchases in real time, your friends know your location in real time, no check-in necessary.
Blippy will also integrate with other sites, like
iTunes and
Amazon, to show more details of what you bought. That's pretty cool, actually, because it's more than my bank and credit card websites show me. Sometimes it's easy to forget what you spent that $40 on at Amazon. Even if you're not cool with sharing your whole retail life with the Internet, that extra information might make a private Blippy account worth having.

This silhouette wins the award for
coolest thing we've seen all day -- and it's not just because the tiny dancer above is in the buff. This is a little test that will tell you whether the left or right hemisphere of your brain is more dominant.
Instead of concentrating on her chest, concentrate on the woman's movement. If you see her spinning clockwise, that means you're using the right side, or more creative side of your brain. If she appears to be moving counter-clockwise, then that means the left side, or more logical side of your think muscle is superior.
At the Switched office, some of us see her going clockwise, others see her spinning counter-clockwise. At least one of us claims to see both, while another one of us opened this animation in Adobe ImageReady in order to isolate the frames to see if there's any direction-changing funny business going on. There isn't.

Like me, you will probably unwind over the holidays and have a few drinks at a party with friends (or alone while crying in the dark). Just keep these tragic stories about mixing gadgets and booze in mind.
Last year Whitehall, NY resident Leslie J. "Bomber" Marr was arrested and charged with felony DWI and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle for driving a Cruzin' Cooler while intoxicated. Who could have seen that coming? [Link]
18-year-old James N. P. Miller, of Cincinnati passed into ironic infamy this past Halloween when he was busted for DWI while wearing a breathalyzer costume. [Link]
Big Brother is always watching, and if you happen to be ridiculously drunk while you stumble into a convenience store, chances are the video of the incident is going to spread across the internet like wildfire.
Take note: your ability to evade the police in your car diminishes greatly when you are intoxicated. Case in point, the 18-year old girl in Jackson, Michigan that was chased down and busted by a cop on a Segway. [Link]
Like I said earlier, Big Brother is always watching. And there isn't a better candidate for the role of Big Brother than Google. If you happen to be an Australian man passed out drunk on your lawn, the StreetView car will be waiting, ready to pounce. [Link]
Excessive drinking impairs judgement and can result in mood swings. Take 22-year old David Robinson for example. Last month he was charged in Perth, Scotland with breaching the peace after he threatened passersby and challenged a lamp post to a fight. [STV]
Be careful where you pass out. Crawling into an industrial garbage bin is not recommended, as Brighton UK resident Scott Williams found out one fateful July morning when the contents of the bin were crushed by a garbage truck. [Link]

E-commerce sales for the holiday are doing so well that it is almost certain they will post a gain for the holiday season.
According to Comscore, the online research firm, "For the holiday season-to-date, $19.9 billion has been spent online, marking a 3% increase versus the corresponding days last year. The most recent week saw above average online spending growth of 4% versus a year ago, as two individual days surpassed $800 million in spending, led by Thursday, Dec. 10, with $852 million."
Are the sales coming at the expense of "brick-and-mortar" stores, or are they really net sales that augment sales at retail locations? The trend is probably not good for conventional retailers.

The last time
we bumped into MSI's 15.6-inch X-Slim X600 we were unimpressed with the build quality -- it just seemed like too much plastic in too thin of a form factor to be trusted. Well, the X-Slim X600 Pro seems to have addressed some of the
perceived quality issues, with a new scratch-resistant surface and silver inlays, but we'll have to play with one before we really know if these refinements are merely skin deep. The largest hardware tweak is the new chiclet keyboard, while inside the laptop has scored "the latest" Intel Core 2 Duo CULV processor, matched with the same ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4330 graphics from last time. There's no word on price or availability, but we're sure we'll be seeing and hearing more at CES.
